NEW BOOK FROM LOYOLA PRESS TAKES AN ENLIGHTENING LOOK AT THE SINGLE LIFE

Today over fifty percent of the U.S. adult population is single--the largest percentage in American history. But despite their majority, single adults are more often considered the exception than the norm. In the thought-provoking introduction to her new book of meditations on the single life, Debra Farrington explains that our society-and particularly the church-pays too little attention to the prevalence of singles. With One Like JesusFarrington takes a step towards changing this perspective, using a practical and spiritual approach to discuss the rewards and challenges faced by single people today.

Farrington addresses the single state from a biblical perspective, presenting a series of short meditations and questions based on passages from the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. These serve to open a dialogue with the reader about the good and bad aspects of being alone.

Farrington brings her own experiences as a single adult to her writing, discussing contemporary issues such as sex (it's natural to want it) and the media's view of being single (mainly negative). She addresses common dilemmas that single people face, such as being alone on a holiday or having trouble reaching out to others for help. Each passage ends with an insightful question aimed at the reader: "How does the time you spend alone nourish you?"; "Is there something you need to explore or do while you are single?" The questions personalize the meditations, inviting the reader to think about them in relation to his or her own life.

From celebrating the peacefulness of being alone to dealing with inevitable periods of loneliness, Farrington brings comfort and empowerment to single people, showing that this is a state in which men and women can find contentment and spiritual fulfillment. Her book provides the foundation for interesting discussions about what it means to be single in the Christian community and in our society at large. Farrington has made a valuable contribution to the much-needed dialogue about being single, the growing prevalence of singles in our society, and how men and women can embrace this state as a positive reality.

Debra K. Farrington is the Editorial Director at Morehouse Publishing in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She is the author of Romancing the Holy and also leads seminars on various professional and spiritual topics.
